About Cassandra Cooper

A maker based in Derbyshire creating colourful items with textiles using processes in crocheting, cord knotting and knitting. Cassandra uses inspiration from nature, geometric shapes and vintage patterns to create each finished product.

Why did you start making your product?

I've always been creative and went straight from school to studying art and design at college. At university I made knitted lampshades and became obsessed with creating things from cord and experimenting with materials. This became more of a hobby whilst I worked a "Normal" job until lockdown when i decided to take the plunge and set up my own business!

What inspires your products or collections?

I love nature, colour, geometric shapes and patterns reminiscent of the 60's and 70's. I also like to keep everything I make as eco friendly as possible.

What is the best thing someone has said about your products?

I love the colours!

What is your favourite product/collection, and why?

My baskets are my favourite product collection mainly because they are so useful. I love that something can be both beautiful and functional at the same time!

How does your local area impact what you make?

I like the fact that Glossops heritage is in the cotton industry and my products give a modern take on using cotton in a different way.

What does a dream day of making look like to you?

Honestly, being able to put a box set on and do a few hours of 'work' crocheting away. Then perhaps having a few hours in the garden in the sunshine and getting some macrame done to rest my crochet hands!

How do you make your products more sustainable?

All of my cord is made from textiles from either production waste or recycled materials. Its not dyed and instead colour matched before re-threading making it super friendly.

What is the most important thing about your practice?

Making beautiful eco friendly products.

What is your favourite thing about making that you don't get to talk about very often?

Getting time to make new products! I love trying out a new knots/stitch and being able to translate that into a new product is a fantastic feeling.

How do you want your products to make people feel?

Happy and cosy!
