In a bid to become more eco-friendly and reduce our plastic usage, many of us are looking for easy, everyday alternatives we can use. Cling film and tin foil are staple products that would be found in most kitchens. It’s something we use all the time but do we actually need to? Surely there’s is a reusable alternative…
So why is usually cling film bad for the environment?
Cling Film is a single use plastic that in the majority of cases cannot be recycled. Once used, it ends up in landfill where it sits for hundreds of years. Similarly to plastic carrier bags, cling film can also end up in the ocean and effect marine life.
Our beeswax food wraps are a fantastic environmentally friendly alternative to cling film.
You use the warmth of your hands to shape the wraps around your food and kitchenware. Beeswax is also naturally antibacterial so it will help to keep your food fresher for longer too!
Each beeswax wraps should last between 6 months to a year depending on use and care. If they do start to dry out, they can easily be refreshed by popping them on a lined baking tray and placing them in the oven for a few minutes on a really low heat. When they eventually reach the end of their life, simply cut the beeswax wrap into pieces and add to a compost heap. Caring for a beeswax wrap is super easy too! Wash with lukewarm soapy water, rinse and hang to dry. Don’t use hot water as this will melt the wax!
Why are our Beeswax Food Wraps extra special?
Not only has each one been handmade in the UK by Rhiannon, all the fabrics used to make them have also been designed by her too! Each one has been created from her own hand drawn artwork so they can’t be found elsewhere!
The cotton fabric used to make the beeswax wraps is printed in London, which helps to reduce the carbon footprint in comparison to fabrics that have been shipped in from overseas. It is also printed using digital pigment inks, which uses around 95% less energy than screen printing.
Once made, each wrap is packaged in an envelope with an information label on which Rhiannon prints herself. All the packaging is made from recycled paper and is fully recyclable! The packaging envelopes are designed and made by Rhiannon using a Cricut machine to cut out the window so the design can be seen.
So could you make the switch?
Our Reusable Beeswax Food Wraps are an easy switch you can make from cling! The initial cost of switching to reusables can often work out more expensive than buying the single use equivalent but they are a long term investment that you won’t need to keep regularly buying.
It’s a small and relatively easy adjustment we can all make to our daily routine!
